ASEEES Statement concerning the detention of academic researcher David Scheffel

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) writes to express its concern about the circumstances surrounding the detention of the academic researcher David Scheffel, a widely esteemed anthropologist whose work focuses on Slovakia’s vulnerable Roma population. The information available to us suggests that the conditions in which Dr. Scheffel is being held may fall short of E.U. standards. We hope that every effort will be made to resolve this case transparently and fairly as soon as possible and that Dr. Scheffel will be given the access to materials and legal support required to mount his defense.
